Measles

As you all may be aware there has been several reported cases of measles in Swansea lately. As I  have been asked about the current situation I thought I better let you all know something.

There are no current recommendations that group meetings involving children should be cancelled and until we are told other wise. I can only draw your attention to a statement issued by Dr Ian Gordan, the British Swimming Doctor

As I am sure you are both aware there is currently an epidemic of measles in the Swansea area with over 800 cases reported so far.
This essentially has happened because in South Wales there was a relatively low uptake of the MMR ( mumps , measles and rubella) vaccine around 1990 and the years after because of the now completely disproved association with autism.

This resulted in a low herd immunity which is the cause of the current epidemic.
Measles is a potentially serious viral illness ( and would result in significant time out of the water quite apart from its complications) and it is important to ensure that our swimmers have had an MMR immunisation and I wondered whether this email could be forwarded. This is particularly important as the age of the swimmers would put them in the cohort that may have missed out of immunisation.
If there are any queries the coaches/swimmers can contact me directly

best wishes
Dr Ian Gordon

So in light of this it may be prudent to ensure that all your swimmers are up to date with their current vaccinations.
